Take All the Lads and Lasses to the Mid-Maryland Celtic Festival
We recently spent a very sunny and humid June afternoon at the Mid-Maryland Celtic Festival. The Celtic Festival takes place in the small town of Mount Airy, where Montgomery, Howard, and Frederick counties meet. As the name might suggest, the festival celebrates the culture and heritage of both Irish and Scottish people. It has a little bit of something for everybody. Whether you want to taste every beer in the Guinness catalog or pet several species of Scottish and Irish dogs, the Mid-Maryland Celtic Festival will likely have something for you. As both of those sounded like fun to us, we had a great time. About the Mid-Maryland Celtic Festival…

America as an Indie Ballpark: Regency Furniture Stadium
Baseball is already one of the most American things I can think of. Independent baseball is somehow even more American, with its mix of hustling younger players trying to catch the eye of a big league club and former big league veterans for whom things have gone a little bit south. Add in hot dogs slathered in crab, a kiddie pool, a beer garden, a hand-operated scoreboard, and more corporate sponsorship than even the most dedicated shill could possible handle, all in a stadium named after a furniture store, and its basically the most American thing I could think of. Having already visited the Major Leagues and affiliated ball, I…

Pfitzner Stadium, the Stadium So Bad They Want to Take Its Team Away
For our last entry, we went to Camden Yards, one of the most acclaimed stadiums in the majors. Next I headed to a serious contender for the worst stadium in affiliated baseball. The Washington Nationals’ High-A affiliate Minor League team plays only about twenty miles south of its parent team, in exurban Woodbridge, Virginia. Unfortunately, the Potomac Nationals’ home field, G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium, is extremely low-rent. So much so that Minor League Baseball has reportedly told the team that it needs to find a new home by the end of the 2018 season, or else. Pfitzner Stadium is small, the seats consist almost entirely of metal bleachers, and there…

In Search of Migrants in Chesapeake, Virginia
Birding is fun if you’re good at it. The really great thing about birding is that even if you are terrible at it, it’s still fun. I am terrible at it. I don’t like to get up early. Somewhere I have cloth to clean my binoculars, but I’m not sure where. I have a tendency to find a bird way off in the distance and wish I hadn’t left my scope in my car. And lord help me if I’m supposed to figure out where that bird song is coming from, because it’s not happening. But I love to be out on my own in nature, and I love going…
