Virginia Beach is for Dog Lovers
When Dan had to go to Virginia Beach for work recently, I decided to go on a day trip with him, and bring our senior shih tzu, Bilbo. Unlike many beach towns, Virginia Beach is a very dog friendly place. There are very strict rules about when dogs can be on the boardwalk down by the water between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but during the “off season,” (AKA the rest of the year) you can bring your dog to the beach at any time of day.
Where to Stay
Many hotels right on the beach allow dogs. However, some will only allow them in the off season and many charge a fee. When we visit Virginia Beach, we always stay at La Quinta on Pacific Avenue. Two blocks away from the beach, this reasonably priced hotel offers free parking, free breakfast, and dogs stay free. It’s a great location — and with recent updates and renovations.
What to Eat
Although many of the restaurants on the actual boardwalk in Virginia Beach do not allow dogs unless they are service dogs, there are plenty of dog friendly restaurants nearby. If you’re looking for a pub to have a cool drink on a warm day, try Abbey Road Pub & Restaurant, which has a dog-friendly patio.
One block away from the beach, on Atlantic Avenue, is Cactus Jack’s Bar & Grill. This Mexican cantina-style restaurant offers plenty of dog-friendly patio seating. The food is also really good — as are the margaritas!
Once you’re finished with your meal, take a quick ten minute drive to The Skinny Dip Frozen Yogurt Bar. They sell a dog friendly dessert of frozen yogurt with a Milkbone topping for only $1. Bilbo really loved this cold treat after an afternoon of walking up and down the boardwalk.
